Hidden Valley heads way into girls

As a defender, Haley Cutright is not accustomed to spending much time around her opponent’s goal.

In Tuesday’s Group AA girls soccer quarterfinal at Dwight Bogle Tiffany Notes Dangle Key ring, she made a rare appearance in that vicinity, and her Hidden Valley team will always remember the visit.

With just seconds of injury time left in regulation, Cutright headed a corner kick from Anna Moir into the upper left corner of the Jefferson Forest’s goal to break a scoreless tie.

And just like that, Hidden Valley had a 1-0 win and a spot in Friday’s state semifinals, where they will take on defending state champion Broad Run at Radford University.

Cutright, who admitted she was already starting to focus on what the Titans would need to do in overtime, said she was as surprised as anyone to see the ball fly into the goal.

“Right place, right time,” Cutright said. “I think the goalie touched it with her fingertips. … I’ve never done scored like that before.”

While coaches often have several set plays to run in corner kick situations, the Titans’ score came in the midst of chaos.

Hidden Valley coach Will Krause only had time for Tiffany keys heart key locket words of instruction.

“Hurry up,” Krause said he yelled. “I knew there was very little time left.”

Luckily for Krause, Moir was a good listener. The senior defender put the ball down and sent it toward the goal in almost a single motion.

“I saw their girl hit the ball out and I started sprinting right way,” she said. “I knew they were going to call it pretty soon. I just kicked it to the middle of the goal.”

Cutright wedged her way into a group of JF defenders. Everyone went for the ball, but only Cutright made contact.

The Cavaliers’ Anna Carter had six saves prior to Cutright’s header got through.

“You don’t know how many times I’ve been through this,” JF coach Stan Golon said. “It was a bit of magic for them — again.”

This was the second straight season that Hidden Valley ended the Cavs’ season. Last year, the Titans won 2-0 at JF.

Two years ago, a late corner kick goal scored by Tiffany Blue Box Charm and Chain in the state semifinals eliminated the Cavaliers.

“I even think we had the better scoring opportunities,” Golon said. “But it was very hard for both teams to get good shots off.”

After a tentative start for both teams, the Titans started to press the situation in the last 30 minutes.

Paxton Sauerwald had two open looks at the goal midway through the second half, but neither shot got through.

“The last 30 minutes were better, but it still wasn’t like what I think we’re capable of doing,” Krause said.

“On Friday, we’ll need to have 11 girls Tiffany Notes heart tag key ring together if we want to move on to the finals.”

India-made Anant diamond jewellery to sparkle in W Asia

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) will soon show-case its recently tiffany launched Anant diamond jewellery with the ‘Made-in-India’ tag in West Asia. The move follows encouraging response for Anant in the domestic market.

Mr Sanjay Kothari, convenor of promotion, marketing and business development at GJEPC, said, “We wanted to introduce Anant in Dubai by April, but it has been delayed due to the recent financial crisis in Dubai. It would now be launched in July.” The Council has already spent Rs 9 crore on various promotional activities including advertisements and refurbishing retailers’ outlets to highlight the brand.

Actor Sonam Kapoor has also been roped in as a brand ambassador, said Mr Kothari.

Retailers stand to gain as the Council will take care of promotional expenses.

RS 11-CR CORPUS GJEPC formed a corpus of Rs 11 crore, with retailers chipping in with Rs four money clips lakh each, and manufacturers Rs 10 lakh each while the Council itself set aside Rs 2 crore for the promotional activities.

The Council in September had taken upon itself to promote diamond jewellery after De Beers cut its promotional activities in the country, said Mr Kothari.

GJEPC created a new brand Anant Diamond Jewellery by bringing together top 100 retail jewellers including GRT, Khazana Jewellers, Joy Alukkas, Reliance, Tanishq, Orra, TBZ, Rio Tinto, Anmol Jewellers and Carbon.

With the gold prices rising, many people are now considering the single line Anant Diamond jewellery to offer as gift, said a Mumbai- based jeweller.

DIAMOND SHORTAGE Rough diamond prices have risen sharply in the past few months after most miners pendants such as De Beers, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Alrosa cut their production following the economic downturn and financial constraints. De Beers recently revealed that it has reduced its first quarter production by almost 90 per cent in 2009.

The De Beers Diamond Trading Company (DTC) has raised the prices of rough diamonds by about five and 10 per cent since March this year, said a Mumbai-based jeweller. Most of the DTC’s Indian sightholders were the worst-affected as prices of smaller roughs being supplied to the Indian market were raised between 3 and 7 per cent. Surat, the hub for diamond processing, imports about Rs 30,000 crore worth of roughs per annum, with De Beers supplying about 60 per cent.

THE JEWELRY AND SILVER of F. WALTER LAWRENCE

Lawrence was bom in Baltimore on November 2, 1864, one of thirteen children, to France La Fayette (1824-1885) and Hannah Rebecca Lawrence (nee Thomas; 1829-1915).2 In 1880, when he was sixteen, the family moved to Newark, New Jersey, where Frank Lawrence learned the rudiments of designing and fabricating jewelry. Obituaries state that he apprenticed with Durand and Company (1869-1936), a prominent jewelry manufacturer in Newark; the silver firm Howard and Company (c. 1866 – c. 1922) in New York City; and Jaques and Marcus (c. 1882-1892), a maker and retailer in New York City. One source states that he “apprenticed himself, purposely working at the bench that he might physically learn the creative art of the jewelry trade.”3 In 1883 he was listed in the Newark city directories as “jeweler” at 12 Centre Street. In 1889 he established his first business in Newark under his full name at the above location,4 but it is not known what type of jewelry he was making.

On April 19, 1893, Lawrence married Bertha Baldwin (1866-1930).5 They had one son, Walter Baldwin Lawrence (1895-1956).6 In 1894 Lawrence moved his business to 857 Broadway in New York City, where he was listed in the city directory under “jewelry” and residing at 4 West Ninety-fifth Street. he must have been quite well established in the field by this time, for he was among the guests at the twentieth annual banquet of the New York Jewelers’ Association held at Delmonicos on November 15, 1894. This event was attended by prominent jewelers and silver makers in the New York City region, including George W. Shiebler (1846-1920), George Krementz (1837-1918) from Krementz and Company (1869-present) in Newark, and George Frederick Kunz (1856-1932), the prominent gem expert at Tiffany and Company (1837-present) in New York City.7

In 1898 Lawrence opened his first jewelry salon at 41 Union Square.8 he called the business F. Walter Lawrence and remained at this location until he moved to 322 Fifth Avenue in 1905, according to the city directory. In 1915 he moved to the Harriman Building at 527 Fifth Avenue, Room 706. all of his jewelry and silverware is marked “F.W.L.,” “F. w. LAWRENCE,” Or “p. WALTER LAWRENCE.”

Lawrence often adapted the motifs and trends of the jewelry and silver being produced at the turn of the century. he mounted gemstones in collet settings (the stone is completely surrounded by the setting), a technique based on the arts and crafts style made popular in England by Charles Robert Ashbee (1863 -1942), and Arthur Joseph Gaskin (1862-1928) and his wife Georgie Gaskin (1866-1934). From Marcus and Company (1892-before 1950) in New York City, he borrowed the technique of pearling, which, in fact, had been perfected by Charles Osborne (1847-1920) when he was a silver designer for Tiffany and Company and later for the Whiting Manufacturing Company (1840-1926) in Providence, Rhode Island.

The first known piece of jewelry by Lawrence, the ring in Plate IV, which dates to 1901, utilizes both of the above techniques. It was specially designed for a client and bears the initials “MP” worked into the braidlike pattern on the back of the shank, along with the dates 1851 and 1901, on either side of the shank near the stone, suggesting the ring was a fiftieth birthday present. Six diamonds in collet settings serve as the “prongs” to hold the hessonite garnet in place. The gold mounting is decorated with pearling and designed in a spiral pattern that has been heavily chased to give the effect of octopus tentacles. An amethyst and diamond brooch from the same period (Pl. Ill) is designed along similar lines but is finished in a more dramatic manner with the upper part of the octopus-like tentacles ending in small halfround pearl-like elements and the far ends of the tentacles terminating in diamonds in collet settings.

This curvilinear style could be called the American version of art nouveau, a less exuberant expression of the whiplash line of French art nouveau. On the brooch in Plate II the chased gold mount in the pearling style is set with a star sapphire within a scrolling border. Two white opals are set at either end of the brooch, their bluish coloration picked up in the four Montana sapphires9 and their greenish tones in the demantoid garnets. For the next several years, Lawrence continued to work in this style, adapting it to form an interlacing design on a ring set with a cabochon emerald.10

By 1903 Lawrence was creating a new style of jewelry that incorporated baroque pearls from the Mississippi River (see Pl. V). He wrote in Town and Country that the neck ornament illustrated here is an example of “the apt use of these mal-formed pearls as sails on the little galley.”11 The sails on the four galleys on the side panels are made up of dogtooth hinge pearls, while the billowing sail on the galleon in the central plaque is a large baroque pearl.12 The nautical motif continues in the dolphins surrounding the central plaque and in the cattails and scallop shells on either side of the flanking panels and on the clasp. The gold has been hammered to give it the soft, handwrought appearance characteristic of most of Lawrences early jewelry.

Lawrence exhibited this neck ornament at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition of Art Craftsmanship at arts clubs in Syracuse and Rochester, New York, in 1903, along with jewelry incorporating Cyprian or Phoenician dass “taken from the tombs throughout Syria, where it has lain for centuries.”13 The fragments of ancient cups, bowls, and bottles had “a wonderful iridescence” from their long burial.14 The fragments were found in the ancient city of Jerusalem and imported into this country by Ayeez Kayat.15 Other objects in Ms exhibit were a vinaigrette of which the body was an ancient tear bottle; a buckle and a ring, each with an Egyptian head; a scarf pin with the head of Cleopatra; a sphinx brooch; an Egyptian boat; and a desert scene in a frame decorated with a caravan, pyramids, and palm and lotus trees. The background of the scene was formed from a slightly concave piece of glass so that, when held at different angles, it imitated the “sunset behind the Pyramids.”16

Valentine’s Day murder trial begins

Family members and friends of three slaying victims left the courtroom here Thursday overcome with emotion when lawyers showed images of the dead to the jury.

The trial in the 10-year-old Valentine’s Day slaying case began Thursday morning with opening statements from prosecution and defense attorneys.

During testimony, former Bradley County medical examiner Ron Toolsie explained the wounds documented in his autopsies of the three victims, explaining the types of gunshots and other anatomical evidence.

In front of Judge Amy Reedy, lawyers spent Tuesday and Wednesday selecting “death qualified” jurors for the death penalty case against Maurice Johnson. “Death qualified” means the jurors will consider the death penalty as an option.

Mr. Johnson, 39, is accused of killing Dawn Rogers, 30; Cayci Higgins, 19; and O.J. Blair, 18, on Feb. 14, 1999.

Prosecutor Richard Fisher told the jury Thursday that they would prove that drugs were the reason the tiffany jewelry three were shot execution-style.

“(The defendants) kicked the door in, the back door, then proceeded to kill O.J.; two girls laying or kneeling were shot in the back of the head, one in the throat,” Mr. Fisher said.

Defense attorney Steve Ward told the jury that the case is based on assumptions, “but worse than that, it’s a case built on manufacturing facts to fit those assumptions.”

He stressed that police did not violate the law but were human and began to make theories about what happened.

“Listen to the evidence, facts, circumstances, and don’t make assumptions,” he said.

Fifteen jurors, 11 women and four men, heard the opening arguments and testimony from prosecution witnesses for Mr. Fisher and co-counsel Paul Moyle, assistant district attorney for the 10th Judicial District.

Records show that Cleveland police answered a 911 call at 7:27 a.m. on Feb. 14, 1999, at a two-story silver pendants apartment on 19th Street. Intruders had broken down a back door.

Inside, officers found the three victims with hands bound behind their backs and gunshot wounds to their heads. Local media quickly dubbed the event the “Valentine’s Day murders.”

Cleveland police, Bradley County sheriff’s detectives and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents made their first arrest in the triple slaying in November 2006. Mr. Johnson and Michael Younger were charged with three counts of first-degree murder.

The third defendant, Twanna Blair, was also in the apartment at the time of the shootings, shot in the back. Police first considered her a victim, but in 2006 she was charged as a participant.

The trial resumes this morning in Bradley County Criminal Court.

Suspect who took girl from Centreville school was wearing electronic-monitoring bracelet

A suspect police believed snatched a young girl from a Centreville tiffany jewelry elementary school Tuesday while wearing an electronic-monitoring bracelet remained in custody Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the man is on parole for another crime, but would not elaborate. After entering the school through a door that had been left ajar, the suspect told the girl, who he’d found drinking from a water fountain, that a teacher wanted to see her outside, police said.

The suspect also is accused of attempting to sexually assault the child. A witness saw him lying on top of the girl on the ground outside the school building near the Dumpsters.

Police were not releasing the identity of the 20-year-old suspect pending charges, Centreville Police Detective Kiwan Guyton said. Police expect to complete their investigation and send the case today to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney, he said.

The girl was kidnapped from Lalumier Elementary School at 6702 Bond Ave. at 2:32 p.m. Tuesday.

The man entered the school through a door off the gym/cafeteria, went through the multi-silver cufflinks purpose room and approached the girl in a hallway, Cahokia School District 187 Superintendent Jana Bechtoldt said.

“Obviously we’re very distraught over this situation,” Bechtoldt said. “Our policy is to have all the doors in the school building locked during the school day except for one door by the office. Unfortunately, in this instance, the door was locked but the door was slightly ajar. The last person that had either entered or exited that door did not make sure the door was latched. The door was locked, but it didn’t shut all the way. The doors were apparently out of alignment.”

The door was repaired Wednesday to ensure it will close automatically, Bechtoldt said. All other doors throughout the school building were being checked Wednesday to ensure they all closed fully.

Lalumier has about 370 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The suspect approached the girl as she was getting a drink from a water fountain and told her a teacher wanted to see her outside.

“She went outside with him,” Bechtoldt said. “She was just doing what she thought she was supposed to do.”

Guyton said the mother of the 7-year-old girl called police when her daughter came home crying and in silver money clips disarray. He added that the girl did not know her kidnapper.

“We were advised that the young man came into the building and possibly took one student out,” Guyton said. ” We caught him a short time later.”

Police arrested the suspect in the 6900 block of Missouri Avenue.

A man from a nearby apartment complex saw the two and shouted at the man. The man took off on foot, and the girl ran home

“I knew something was wrong when my daughter came home without her coat and book bag. She ran home to me,” the child’s mother said.

The child’s mother is not being identified because her daughter is the victim of a sex crime and identifying the mother could also identify the child. The News-Democrat does not identify victims of sex crimes.

“He took my baby outside. He was lying on her. Somebody saw him lying on her and yelled at him and scared him. He got off of her. The man who saw him told my baby to run home,” the mother said.

The mother said she wants the suspect “to stay in jail so he has no chance of doing what he did again silver pendants. He might harm somebody else’s child,” she said.

The mother said her daughter was so upset she had to calm her down.

The child was not injured during the kidnapping and attempted assault and was not taken to a doctor.

“I just thank God for protecting my baby. God is good. God is always good,” the mother said.

She said she is unsure whether she will allow her child to return to Lalumier.

School officials reviewed security policies and are considering several options to beef up security at the school, Bechtoldt said.

“We are looking at adding 17 new video cameras in the building so all the doors, entrances and hallways can be monitored continuously throughout the day,” Bechtoldt said. “We are also looking at the possibility of having all the doors locked during the day and having everybody buzzed in and out of the school. I know it won’t be very popular with some parents, but it’s something we are looking at to protect our children.”

Social workers were at the school throughout the day to meet with children and parents and discuss any fears or concerns following the incident.
