Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry, which is celebrating 25 years of service, sustains struggling families with food, rent, utility assistance, jobs and school supplies.

- The Eta Zeta Chapter of Kappa Delta at the University of North Florida raised $5,000 for daniel with a bowling and barbecue fund raiser. Daniel is a multi-service agency that assists more than 1,000 children, adolescents and families each day.

- More than 600 African-American students from Duval County were honored for academic excellence during Gamma Beta Boule’s 26th annual High Potential Youth Recognition Program. David Gaspard of Paxon School for Advanced Studies won the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Educational Achievement Award and $4,000 scholarship. The runners-up were Tonya Herbert, Chloe Herring, Alphonso Wilson and Darien Williams.

- The eighth annual CSX Charity Train Ride raised more than $320,000 to benefit seven charities, with daniel receiving $25,000 for programs that benefit abused, neglected and emotionally troubled children.

- The Sulzbacher Center now has an outdoor dining area with picnic tables to serve the hundreds of hungry men, women and children from the community who come for meals. The area was created with a $10,000 grant from Publix Charities.

- Daniela Aguado, Megan Dailey, Mary Dailey,thanksgiving key rings, Courtney Miller and Brittany Ferrell of Clay County recently sang at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York. These children from the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus joined other select groups throughout North America to be part of a festival chorus of 190 singers.

During its decade-long run, Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project has become the kind of ambitious, multicultural ensemble and free-ranging idea that speaks to the master cellist’s searching intellect, relentless curiosity and impatience with musical categories.

Inspired by the East-West exchange of culture, art and music that took place along ancient trading routes between Europe and Asia, Ma’s ensemble showcases newly composed and traditional music from Silk Road cultures and destinations,discount tiffany cuff Links, from China to Iran, Azerbaijan and Korea. Music from the Americas has also seeped into the concept, including new works by the Argentine-born Osvaldo Golijov. JAZZ

Pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who turned 70 earlier this year, is one of the great jazz musicians on the planet. When he is in good company and in the mood to honor his straight-ahead roots, the inspired brilliance of his improvisations can stop the world.

Of course, Hancock has always had a populist side to his personality too, and the Big-To-Do in his landmark 70th year is the recent release of "The Imagine Project," an earnest crossover CD with a global-peace theme and starry guest list including, among others, Dave Matthews, Anoushka Shankar, Jeff Beck, John Legend,cheap tiffany jewellery, Chaka Khan, Seal, Wayne Shorter and Juanes. As a jazz critic, I’m not the target audience for the album, and found it mostly mundane, lacking the sublime melodic expression, surprise and texture of "River: The Joni Letters," Hancock’s Grammy-winning marriage of jazz and adult-pop interpretations of Joni Mitchell’s music.

Hancock’s road band that arrives in Detroit next week is built to champion "The Imagine Project," with Hancock joined by guitarist Lionel Loueke, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes, bassist Pino Palladino, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and vocalist Kristina Train. Hancock will surely mix in a few of his classic compositions; even in crossover mode, jazz and the spark of improvisation percolate through his conception. But don’t expect state-of-the-art post-bop from this group. (Some material calls the concert a tribute to Donald Byrd, the Detroit-bred trumpeter who gave Hancock his first big break in 1960, but at press time it remained unclear whether any specific tribute programming was planned.)

Chicken-clucking is its own language, or is it?

SIMON: Is that Yiddish they’re speaking? Oy vey. Whatever that means, which introduces the new book for children, "Beautiful Yetta, the Yiddish Chicken." And our next guest, WEEKEND EDITION’s ambassador to the world of children’s literature, Daniel Pinkwater.

Hello, Daniel.

Mr. DANIEL PINKWATER (Author): Hi, Scott. I have to make a sort of insincere disclaimer.

SIMON: Yeah?

Mr. PINKWATER: In selecting books for the program, I consider various criteria. Number one, I have to like it.

SIMON: Yeah.

Mr. PINKWATER: This book I really like. Now, it also happens by chance, that I wrote it.

(Soundbite of laughter)

Mr. PINKWATER: Now, if it were merely that, I would not have brought it in because: modest. But this one is so cool and the pictures are so good, I would be remiss if I didn’t bring it in. So, I apologize for being the author, but I say that all the time.

SIMON: Well, and tell us a little bit about the illustrator, because I understand she’s a very hot young talent.

Mr. PINKWATER: Well, here’s the thing…

SIMON: Yeah?

Mr. PINKWATER: …in our case, the parents didn’t really want us to understand it because they used it as code. It was a secret language. I guess as retaliation, my brother and sister and I all took Latin so that we could have a secret language too. So…

SIMON: Not as many punch lines in Latin though, or am I wrong?

Mr. PINKWATER: One liners fall flat. So I thought it would be fun for a kid to just have a little taste of (unintelligible) mean to be a Rosetta Stone. The kid’s not going to learn Yiddish from reading this book, but it’s an experience of translation and comparative orthography mixed in with a story that turns out to be heartwarming and nice.

SIMON: Well, let’s read it. We have some guests who are going to help us out today.

Mr. PINKWATER: Shall I begin?

SIMON: Yeah. Please.

(Soundbite of clearing throat)

Mr. PINKWATER: Yes, I will.

It is night. A truck is driving on the highway. At the wheel is Mr. Flegleman, the organic chicken rancher. In wooden crates are chickens. The chickens are afraid. The truck rumbles through the darkness.

SIMON: The truck pulls up in front of Phil’s Poultry World, and with a tear in his eye Mr. Flegleman begins to unload the crates. And Mr. Flegleman says, Goodbye, my dear chickens.

Mr. PINKWATER: (Foreign language spoken)

(Soundbite of laughter)

SIMON: Sorry. It’s a beautiful language, after all.

Mr. PINKWATER: Yes.

SIMON: One of the crates has a loose lid. One of the chickens is brave and clever. It’s Yetta, beautiful Yetta. She sees her chance. She struggles out of the crate and runs down the street.

Mr. PINKWATER: Yetta, beautiful Yetta, will not be sold. She will not be soup. She will not be roasted chicken on a Friday night. She is free. She is in Brooklyn.

SARAH BEYER KELLY: I’m free.

Mr. PINKWATER: (Foreign language spoken)

SIMON: And then there’s the skyline of Brooklyn and Yetta exclaims…

KELLY: Where I am?

Mr. PINKWATER: (Foreign language spoken)

I don’t know why this chicken looks Jewish but she does. The streets of Brooklyn are strange to Yetta. Where is the grass? Where are the flowers? It is not like Mr. Flegleman’s chicken ranch.

SIMON: There Yetta and the other chickens led a happy life, running through the fields and eating bugs.

KELLY: Oh,discount tiffany Pendants, my beautiful home.

Mr. PINKWATER: (Foreign language spoken)

(Soundbite of laughter)

SIMON: And then…

Mr. PINKWATER: And then she encounters some Brooklyn rats roughly her size. Get lost.

SIMON: And then, a bus. She says…

KELLY: Oh dear.

Mr. PINKWATER: (Foreign language spoken) The bus nearly hits her.

SIMON: Shouldn’t that be (Foreign language spoken)?

Mr. PINKWATER: It a bus bearing down on you Scott, I think…

SIMON: (Unintelligible).

Mr. PINKWATER: (Unintelligible) sufficient. Yes.

SIMON: Right. I gather. Okay.

Mr. PINKWATER: And then she meets Brooklyn pigeons.

KELLY: Can you help me? I’m hungry.

Mr. PINKWATER: (Foreign language spoken)

SIMON: And the Brooklyn pigeons say…

Mr. PINKWATER: Go back to the farm, silly hen.

SIMON: Oh my. Yetta wanders the streets of Brooklyn, lonely, confused, unhappy.

Mr. PINKWATER: Then Yetta sees a little green bird. She has never seen a bird like it.

KELLY: What is this?

Mr. PINKWATER: (Foreign language spoken)

SIMON: Sneaking up behind the bird sneakily is a sneaky cat. The cat is getting ready to pounce.

KELLY: Go away you, stinky cat.

Mr. PINKWATER: (Foreign language spoken)

SIMON: You know, this is not original observation; you really don’t need the English translation of Yiddish, do you?

Mr. PINKWATER: Not – well…

SIMON: (Foreign language spoken) is clearly a stinky cat. Yetta hears a voice above her head.

Mr. PINKWATER: Yetta looks up. Sitting on telephone wires are many little green birds; they are parrots. Yes, parrots. There are flocks of wild parrots in Brooklyn – this is true. KELLY: Parrots.

Mr. PINKWATER: And then there’s the sequence of Yetta trying to balance on the telephone wire with some difficulty.

KELLY: I come from the country.

SIMON: And then she puts her arm around Eduardo and Eduardo says…

SIMON: The parrots say…

HANSEN: Please stay with us, beautiful chicken.

Mr. PINKWATER: Yetta stayed with the wild parrots of Brooklyn. They showed her how to find fruit and crusts of pizza.

SIMON: And Yetta told them – I love this illustration. Please tell Jill – of Yetta sitting down talking to a gaggle of parrots, a brace of parrots, whatever.

And Yetta told them stories of her life in the country.

Mr. PINKWATER: And chased cats away.

SIMON: In time, because she was so beautiful, and because she could chase cats, Yetta became the leader of the parrots, or maybe their mother.

KELLY: My dear children.

Mr. PINKWATER: (Foreign language spoken)

Mr. PINKWATER: And they are still there. You can go and see for yourself.

SIMON: I’ve got to go this weekend.

Mr. PINKWATER: Is there a parrot colony yet in D.C.? There’s one in Brooklyn. There’s several in Brooklyn, or two or three. They’ve moved to Connecticut. There’s a parrot colony in San Francisco, the same types of parrots.

SIMON: Parrot colony in Chicago.

Mr. PINKWATER: Is there?

SIMON: And unlike the parrots in New York, the parrots in Chicago vote.

Mr. PINKWATER: Very good.

Women prisoners spend time with their children at

"I did not sleep all night after learning from my grandmother that I was going to visit my mother at prison the next day."

This is how 12-year-old Hanan described her feelings when she was told she was going to see her mother during a special iftar at the Jweideh Women’s Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre (JWCRC) on Wednesday.

"I miss my mother and wish that I could visit her more often,key rings," said Hanan, as she played on a swing with her sister in a special playground prepared by the JWCRC to host the inmates’ children at a Ramadan iftar.

The State Security Court convicted Hanan’s mother,rings, Noor, of smuggling hashish into the country from Syria almost three months ago and she was sentenced to seven-and-a-half-years in prison.

"I was framed by my friends who used my car without my knowledge to smuggle hashish. I hope the Cassation Court will declare me innocent," the 40-year-old told The Jordan Times.

Nonetheless, she said,pendants, Wednesday was a very special day for her.

"I did not expect to have iftar with my two daughters and spend some time talking with them and watching them play on the swings’ in front of my eyes," the mother of four said.

The JWCRC organised the special iftar for half a dozen inmates, either convicted or awaiting trial,Charm bracelet, and their children.

The prison administration also distributed gifts to the inmates’ children and organised a comedy play in the dining hall shortly after iftar that was watched by over 200 cheering prisoners.

JWCRC Director Lt. Colonel Hana Afghani said the Ramadan iftar idea aimed at reuniting detained or imprisoned mothers with their children.

"This was a gesture by the prison administration to show the inmates that we really care for their well-being and that of their children," said Afghani, who has headed the JCWRC for the past 11 years.

"This activity is one of many that will help inmates’ rehabilitation and their future integration into their communities," she told The Jordan Times.

The centre currently houses 262 women, but the full capacity of the premises is 450.

Fifty-year-old Shrouq expressed her gratitude for the prison administration in allowing her to see her 10-year-old son face-to-face and have an iftar meal with him.

"I could not hold back my tears when my son walked through the prison gates and ran towards me screaming ‘mom’ mom I miss you’," the mother of eight said.

Shrouq has been in prison for 10 months while on trial for murdering her neighbour, a charge she strongly denied.

Shrouq’s son Nidal said he was very happy to see his mother,cuff Links, especially since he is used to seeing her only "from behind glass during the prison’s short visiting hours".

"I wish that the prison administration would organise more visits like this one so that I can see my mother in person and hug her," said Nidal.

Downtown Duluth clothing store to close

Part of a more refined era in haberdashery in Duluth is coming to a close.

Allenfall’s, which has been selling high-quality gentlemen’s clothing downtown since 1940, is going out of business, owners said Thursday.

Thirty-year employee and part-owner John Mohn said changing demographics, changing culture and a changing uniform all contributed to the decision to close the business.

"Throw in the last 24 months of an economic situation that’s been challenging to businesses, and long-term projections don’t see any of that changing," he said.

He also said the biggest reason for closing at this time is that how people dress for business has changed.

"There’s less tailored clothing being worn," he said.

Located at 324 W. Superior St., Allenfall’s has served male clientele with brands such as Robert Talbot, Alan Paine and Barbour. The clothing is made in America and is of an investment quality,bracelets, Mohn said. The clothier sold women’s apparel from the early 1960s until 1999.

Harry Allenfall started the business and ran it until he died unexpectedly during a buying trip to New York City in 1955. Until 2003, Leo Spooner owned Allenfall’s and served as its CEO. Ruby Allenfall, Harry’s widow,Atlas charm bracelet, also continued as an active force in the business for many years. In 2003, Ed Gould III purchased the business from Spooner when he retired.

Gould now plans to retire and most of the six employees, save Mohn, are also of retirement age, Mohn said.

Allenfall’s customers received letters in the past week telling them of the store’s plans to close Oct. 1.

Most of those customers were the major businessmen and CEOs in the region, Mohn said.

Mohn has been taking calls from customers,Bead bracelet, who have told him it’s sad and that the store and clothing would be missed.

"I can’t say enough kind things about people we’ve done business with," he said. "It’s been a wonderful experience."

At 9 a.m. Monday, the store’s liquidation sale will begin with "legendary" savings on all men’s clothing, furnishings,key rings, sportswear and shoes. The furniture, fixtures, office and display items will also be for sale.

Students selling bracelets to support paralyzed former classmate

When a group of Elon University students were pressed to do a project for tiffany jewellery senior seminar, the answer was simple: “Botswana Lee.” One of their classmates, 21-year-old Lee Mynhardt, was paralyzed from the chest down in early February during a fight at an off-campus party and had to withdraw from school.

Mynhardt, from Botswana, was one semester away from graduating with a degree in business administration. He was known affectionately by his friends as “Botswana Lee.” His classmates decided they would collect donations from local businesses and from the community for their final project. The goal is help raise awareness for spinal cord injuries.

Elon University spokesman Dan Anderson said the students are selling rubber wrist bands for the fundraiser, called “Project Botswana.” Student Kevin Wellington said that all proceeds from the Botswana bracelets will aid Mynhardt and his family. The money will go toward his medical bills and his family’s housing costs.

“He is one of the nicest kids you’d ever meet,” Wellington said of Mynhardt. “He was always happy to see you.” “Even now he remains optimistic about everything.” Wellington hopes the fundraiser will draw awareness to the serious issue of spinal cord injuries. The students have been collecting money from a variety tiffany accessories of sources, Anderson said, and have organized on-campus booths and fundraisers throughout April.

LOCAL BUSINESSES HAVE also started chipping in to raise money for Mynhardt. On Thursday, 5 percent of all restaurant proceeds from Cantina Roble in Elon went to Project Botswana.

B. Christopher’s Restaurant, where Mynhardt worked as a bartender, will also be sponsoring a fundraiser for him next week.

The bracelets, which are being sold for $5 each, each read SCI (Spinal Cord Injury) Awareness.

They also are inscribed with “Cheers,” for the welcome that Mynhardt often used to greet both friends and strangers.

Last month, John Ferrell Cassady, 21, and Clinton Joseph Blackburn, 22, were indicted tffany keys on one count of felonious assault inflicting serious bodily injury. Cassady, an Elon student and Blackburn, a UNCG student, were arrested after turning themselves into the Elon Police Department.

Mynhardt is currently at the Carolina Rehab Center where he is in stable condition and undergoing treatment.

NEW LOOK TO CHRISTMAS ON THE FORESTRY COMMISSION ESTATE AT DELAMERE FOREST

There will be a new look to Christmas on the Forestry Commission estate tiffany jewellery at Delamere Forest near Nantwich in Cheshire from 28 November.

As usual Father Christmas will be in his grotto, but this year he’ll be telling a seasonal story or two. There is also a brand new Winter nature trail and a local bird rescue centre will be displaying birds of prey during weekend opening hours.

The Christmas tree sales centre will open daily between 9am and 5pm from Saturday 28 November until Sunday 20 December. Late night openings will be available on 10 and 11 December until 8pm.

Santa’s grotto will also be open every weekend in December up until Christmas from 9am until 5pm (last entry 4pm) and Santa will be having late nights on 10 and 11 December from 5pm until 8pm.

The grotto will also be open for school visits only on weekdays from Monday 30 November discount tiffany until Friday 18 December.

Delamere is one of the largest Christmas tree outlets in Britain and people in Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire can choose from fir, pine and spruce varieties, ranging in sizes from three to 25 feet high, as well as a range of potted trees.

Forestry staff will also be on hand to give advice on the best tree to buy and how to care for it. To ward off the winter chills, hot food and drink will be available during opening hours.

Christmas tree arrives at Faneuil Hall

It’s still two weeks before Thanksgiving, but that’s not stopping the Christmas tiffany spirit from blasting into the Hub today.

The tallest Christmas tree in New England is being installed today at Faneuil Hall. At noon, the Salvation Army officially kicks off the 2009 Red Kettle season at Downtown Crossing.

The Salvation Army said it first dispatched bell ringers for its annual red kettle drive 10 days ago because of a 30 percent spike in need driven by the recession. The Nov. 2 start is the earliest in the fund-raiser’s history.

Funds dropped into red kettles help pay for soup kitchens, food pantries and other programs Tiffany Keys for families, youth and the elderly, the agency said.

The Norwegian spruce tree being set up at Faneuil Hall is almost 87 feet high, weighs close to 7,500 pounds and will be installed by a crane beginning at 11:45 a.m.

The tree was provided by Egan Acres Tree Farm in New York and is sponsored by Faneuil Hall Marketplace Merchants Association & Marketplace Center, according to a press release.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino will light the tree on Nov. 21. It will be decorated with 15,000 white lights with tiffany bangles some 3,000 red, gold & green ornaments.
